Is Cat8 overkill for New Zealand broadband?

For many standard broadband connections, Cat8 offers more capacity than you need today. It can make sense for a Chorus Hyperfibre setup or a faster internal network, especially if you are planning compatible 10GbE equipment. Your internet speed and LAN speed are separate: the slowest relevant port or device can still limit throughput.

Will it work with existing Cat6 or Cat5e routers and standard RJ45 ports?

Yes. The RJ45 cable is backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6a, Cat6, Cat5e and Cat5 equipment that uses standard RJ45 ports. The connection will run at the speed supported by the connected equipment and network.
